Prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder Among a Group of College Students in Shiraz

Background: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common and often severe psychiatric disorder. This highly distressing associated with poor quality of life. In addition, it characterized by persistent intrusive preoccupation perceived defects or flaws in one’s physical appearance accompanied repetitive behaviors such as mirror checking, excessive grooming, reassurance seeking. Objectives: The purpose this study was to examine the prevalence BDD symptoms body dissatisfaction among college students. Furthermore, current examined students’ checking parts that they were most concerned about. research also sought comorbidities symptoms, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, social anxiety. Methods: A total 750 students recruited from different schools Shiraz University, including Social Science, Engineering, Art, Education Psychology, Science using cluster sampling method. Two classes randomly selected each school, those who volunteers took part study. Participants completed several questionnaires, Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Phobia Eating Attitude Test. To analyze data, statistics methods, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation chi-squared test used. Results: results showed about 77% dissatisfied at least one their bodies. findings revealed 4.5%. our indicated mostly skin followed hair, nose, weight, stomach, height, teeth, breast, other body. terms behaviors, front mirror, seeking, seeking treatment, comparing themselves others behaviors. prevalent comorbidity obsessive compulsive anxiety, disorders. Conclusions: highlighted majority are high risk mental health problems.
